Drawing a Red Line in the Paracas Desert (2017) is a series of four photographs documenting a performance in the Paracas Desert, Peru. Carrying a continuous length of red alpaca wool, I ran across the landscape, drawing a temporary red line through the desert. The action became a gesture of connection, linking my body to a place deeply rooted in the history of textile making.
The Paracas region is home to one of the oldest and most sophisticated textile traditions in the Americas. This performance emerged from a desire to consciously engage with that cultural legacy and to reflect on how ancestral knowledge can be activated through contemporary artistic practice. The red alpaca wool serves as both a material and a symbol, evoking the thread as a carrier of memory, movement, and continuity.
Rather than leaving a permanent mark on the landscape, the work proposes an ephemeral intervention that exists through the act of walking, the photographic documentation, and the viewer's imagination. Drawing a Red Line in the Paracas Desert marks an important moment in my practice, expressing my commitment to textiles as both a medium and a way of understanding relationships between landscape, memory, and cultural identity.
