Giving Birth to a Pomegranate is a series of five photographs created in response to a collaboration with poet Andrea Cruzado and her work Parto.
Through this series, I explore and reclaim the symbolic power of giving birth. Growing up within a patriarchal and religious society, I have experienced how the female body is often defined through its reproductive capacity. With this work, I reflect on birth not only as a biological act, but as a form of creation, agency, and transformation.
As a female artist, I question the ways in which women can reclaim the power to generate, imagine, and bring new worlds into existence. The act of creation extends beyond motherhood: it also exists through artistic practice, through ideas, and through the ability to shape our own narratives.
In these photographs, I use my body and a pomegranate as symbolic elements. The pomegranate, a fruit historically connected with fertility, regeneration, and cycles of life, becomes a metaphor for the works, ideas, and identities we bring into being. The ritual performed with the fruit and the soil where I stand connects my body to the land, ancestry, and memory.
As a Peruvian female artist, I create this gesture as a declaration: I have the power to give birth to my own art, my own visions, and my own forms of existence.
