Matilde returned home to her native village of Pantipata, located in the Province of Anta, Cuzco, Peru, after twenty-two years away. She had migrated alone to Lima, the capital city, at the age of nine, speaking only Quechua, her mother tongue. At the age of twenty-six, she reconnected with her family after hearing a radio broadcast announcing her mother’s funeral.
In 2017, she returned to Pantipata with her sister Francisca. This reunion with her family and homeland strengthened her bond with them and transformed her experience of displacement. During this journey, she also visited her mother’s grave in the town of Poroi. This film was part of the official selection for the screening of the UNESCO Film Program for International Mother Language Day and the Indigenous Film Festival London 2018.
